CAMPFIRE SMOKE ALARMS TO STUDENTS

n/a

In celebration of Fire Prevention Week, more than 2,500 smoke alarms will be distributed to elementary students in all Findlay City Schools during October 7-13 as part of the Project S.A.F.E. collaboration. Project S.A.F.E. - Smoke Alarms For Everyone - is the first effort of its kind in the community. It's a collaboration of the Findlay Fire Department, Findlay City Schools, and the American Red Cross of Hancock, Seneca and Wyandot Counties. "We are glad we can be a part of this program and make smoke alarms available to so many homes in Findlay. Helping families prepare before emergencies happen is a cornerstone of our mission and the first tip we always share is to have working smoke alarms in your home," says Red Cross Executive Director Todd James. "When Jerry Greer approached us with this idea, we said yes right away." Greer, a captain with the Findlay Fire Department, has been passionate about providing smoke alarms for homes since responding to a fire in 2006, in which three people lost their lives. "A common misconception is that all homes have working smoke detectors and Findlay has a very low rate of structure fires. It is a known fact: there are kids in this school district who go to bed every night with no working smoke detectors in their home. Every week, the Findlay Fire Department (FFD) finds residences that do not have even one working smoke detector in the home. It's not if we will have a structure fire with kids inside, it is when will we have a fire with kids still inside." Along with distributing free smoke alarms, the FFD and Red Cross will present fire safety and prevention programs at the schools during Fire Prevention Week. Barb Bish, Community Relations Coordinator for Findlay City Schools, says the schools are excited about the program. "Our principals know that these smoke alarms will help save students' lives and having the fire department and Red Cross visit the schools will be a great learning experience for the children." Support for the program is provided by Walmart, who donated $7,500 towards the purchase of the smoke alarms. Additional funding is provided by The Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation and Hancock Federal Credit Union.
